How to Watch Joker on Netflix in the US with a VPN (2026)

Joker (2019) is currently available on Netflix in France. The official Netflix France page confirms that the psychological thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, and Zazie Beetz is part of the country’s streaming catalog, with English audio and subtitles.

However, Joker is not currently available on Netflix US. If you’re in the United States, you can try connecting to a French VPN server using Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN. All three providers offer French IP locations.

Keep in mind that using a VPN does not guarantee access to another country’s Netflix catalog. According to Netflix’s VPN guidelines, the service may recognize VPN connections and limit users to movies and shows with worldwide licensing rights.

How to watch Joker on Netflix with a VPN

Since Netflix France currently carries Joker, you can try connecting to a French VPN server before opening Netflix. Follow these steps:

1. Choose a VPN. Private Internet Access is our first recommendation, followed by ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
2. Download and install the VPN app.
3. Connect to a server in France.
4. Fully close Netflix if it is already open.
5. Reopen Netflix after the VPN connects.
6. Sign in with your existing Netflix account.
7. Search for Joker.
8. Start playback if the title appears.

France is a suitable country to try because the Netflix France listing currently displays Joker without an unavailability warning. It also confirms English and French audio, English and French subtitles, and offline downloads.

Make sure you select the 2019 film directed by Todd Phillips rather than Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) or another similarly named title. Netflix may still recognize the VPN and prevent the movie from appearing or playing.

Best VPNs for watching Joker on Netflix

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all provide French VPN locations. PIA includes a streaming-optimized option, while ExpressVPN and NordVPN offer alternative connection choices across France.

VPN	France locations	Option to try first
Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice)	France, FR Streaming Optimized	FR Streaming Optimized
ExpressVPN	Alsace, Marseille, Paris – 1, Paris – 2, Strasbourg	Paris – 1
NordVPN	Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg, plus automatic France selection	Automatic France server selection

These locations come from the providers’ official server directories. Although all three services offer French IP addresses, none guarantees access to Joker through Netflix.

1. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is our Editor’s Choice for Joker because it offers a dedicated France Streaming Optimized location alongside its standard French VPN connection.

According to the official PIA server directory, its French locations include France and FR Streaming Optimized. The directory does not identify multiple separately selectable French cities.

Start with FR Streaming Optimized. PIA provides this location specifically for streaming, making it the most practical first connection to try when accessing French streaming services.

Open the PIA application, navigate to the server list, and search for France. Select FR Streaming Optimized and connect before reopening Netflix.

If Joker does not appear, disconnect and switch to the standard France location. You can also reconnect to the streaming-optimized location to try another available French server.

PIA distinguishes between physical and virtual VPN server locations. A virtual location gives users an IP address associated with one country while its underlying hardware operates somewhere else.

The provider’s virtual server documentation explains this distinction. France does not appear among its published virtual country locations, although PIA does not document the physical hosting details of every individual French endpoint.

PIA also supports WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols. WireGuard is a reasonable starting point for streaming because it uses a lightweight design intended to deliver efficient VPN connections.

If Netflix does not display the movie, try reconnecting, changing protocols, or clearing your browser data. You can also consult PIA’s streaming support guide for additional troubleshooting instructions.

Even with a streaming-optimized location, Netflix may still recognize PIA’s IP addresses and restrict access to regional titles. PIA cannot guarantee that Joker will appear or play.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is another option for connecting to France. The provider offers several French server locations, including two separate Paris entries, giving users alternatives if one connection experiences problems.

The official ExpressVPN server directory lists France – Alsace, France – Marseille, France – Paris – 1, France – Paris – 2, and France – Strasbourg.

Start with Paris – 1. If Netflix does not display Joker, disconnect and try Paris – 2 or Marseille. Strasbourg and Alsace provide additional French locations without requiring you to switch countries.

You can also select France without choosing a city. ExpressVPN can choose a French connection through its automatic location-selection system.

The provider’s France VPN page confirms that it operates physical servers in Paris, Marseille, Alsace, and Strasbourg. It also documents upgraded 40Gbps server capacity in Paris and Marseille.

These physical French servers provide French IP addresses without routing the connection through hardware in another country. The additional Paris server entry gives users another option within the same city.

ExpressVPN supports Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN at its listed French locations, although protocol availability may depend on the device and application.

If you experience slow speeds, another French server may offer better performance. Actual connection speeds depend on your internet service, distance from the server, and network congestion.

However, having multiple French locations does not guarantee Netflix compatibility. Netflix may recognize ExpressVPN’s IP addresses and restrict access to Joker despite the French connection.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN provides French IP addresses through hundreds of servers and offers both automatic and city-level connection options.

According to NordVPN’s official France server page, the provider currently advertises more than 300 French servers across four server locations. The page specifically identifies Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg as available cities.

For the first connection, open NordVPN, select France, and let the application choose an available server automatically. This is a straightforward starting point if you do not have a preferred city.

You can also select Paris manually. If Netflix does not display Joker, try Marseille or Strasbourg before returning to automatic server selection.

NordVPN’s advertised server count may change as it expands or adjusts its network. Its official directory confirms the named cities but does not provide physical hosting details for every individual French endpoint.

NordVPN also includes SmartPlay, a feature that combines VPN encryption with DNS technology to improve streaming compatibility while keeping your connection private.

According to NordVPN’s SmartPlay documentation, the feature activates automatically when you connect through the NordVPN application.

You do not need to activate SmartPlay separately or adjust your DNS settings. The feature works in the background as part of the VPN connection.

However, SmartPlay does not guarantee access to Joker or any other region-specific Netflix movie. Netflix may still recognize NordVPN and limit the available catalog.

What to do if Joker does not appear

If Netflix does not display Joker after you connect to France, your browser may retain older location information, or Netflix may have recognized your VPN connection. Try these steps:

1. Close Netflix completely.
2. Disconnect from the VPN.
3. Reconnect to France.
4. Try another server or location in the same country.
5. Clear Netflix cookies and your browser cache.
6. Open a private or incognito browser window.
7. Reopen Netflix and sign in again.
8. Search for Joker.

Private Internet Access users should try FR Streaming Optimized first, followed by the standard France location. ExpressVPN users can switch between Paris – 1, Paris – 2, Marseille, Strasbourg, and Alsace. NordVPN users can reconnect automatically or select Paris, Marseille, or Strasbourg.

Make sure you search for Joker (2019), starring Joaquin Phoenix. Do not confuse it with Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), which is a different movie with its own streaming availability.

If the movie still does not appear, Netflix may be restricting the catalog because of VPN detection. The Netflix missing titles guide explains other possible causes, including licensing changes, maturity restrictions, and language preferences.

Netflix may detect the VPN

A VPN changes the public IP address Netflix sees when your device connects to the service. For example, connecting to a French VPN server generally gives Netflix a French IP address instead of your regular US address.

However, a French IP address does not guarantee access to the country’s Netflix catalog. Netflix may recognize the connection as VPN traffic and limit which movies and shows appear.

According to Netflix’s official VPN support page, users connecting through a VPN may only see titles for which Netflix has worldwide licensing rights.

That means Joker may remain unavailable in your Netflix search results even when your VPN application shows France as the connected country.

Trying another French server may resolve some connection problems, but Netflix can still restrict regional playback. No VPN provider guarantees access to every Netflix catalog.

Can you use a Netflix ad-supported plan with a VPN?

No. Netflix currently states that its ad-supported experience does not support VPN connections.

If you subscribe to a Netflix plan with ads, you may encounter playback errors or VPN-related restrictions when connecting through Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN.

Netflix confirms this limitation in its VPN support documentation. To use an ad-supported subscription normally, disconnect the VPN.

An ad-free Netflix subscription avoids this particular restriction, but Netflix may still recognize VPN connections and restrict access to region-specific movies.

Does changing the VPN location change your Netflix account?

No. Connecting to a French VPN server does not change your Netflix email address, password, profiles, or existing account credentials.

The VPN changes the public IP address Netflix sees. It does not automatically convert your US Netflix subscription into a French account or modify your login information.

You can continue signing in with your existing Netflix credentials. However, the movies and shows Netflix displays may depend on regional licensing restrictions, account settings, and VPN detection.

The Netflix US title page does not currently offer Joker for streaming. Current US streaming listings instead identify HBO Max, TNT, TBS, and truTV as available services.

When you disconnect from the VPN, Netflix generally recognizes your regular internet location again without changing your Netflix account settings.

Which VPN should you use?

Private Internet Access is our first recommendation because it offers a dedicated France Streaming Optimized location alongside a standard French connection. These options provide a practical starting point, although Netflix may still detect the VPN.

ExpressVPN is a useful alternative thanks to its physical servers in Paris, Marseille, Alsace, and Strasbourg, including two separately listed Paris locations. NordVPN also provides more than 300 French servers and includes SmartPlay, which activates automatically when you connect.

Netflix France currently carries Joker (2019), making France the verified international region for this guide. However, licensing agreements, VPN detection, and server availability can change, so connecting to France does not guarantee playback from the United States.
