How to Watch The Time Traveler's Wife on Netflix in the US with a VPN (2026)

The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009) is listed on Netflix UK, where subscribers can find the romantic science fiction drama starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. Directed by Robert Schwentke and based on Audrey Niffenegger’s bestselling novel, the movie follows Henry DeTamble, a man who involuntarily travels through time, and Clare Abshire, the woman who loves him despite his unpredictable disappearances. The official Netflix UK movie page identifies the film and lists English original audio and English subtitles.

Unfortunately, The Time Traveler’s Wife is not currently available on Netflix US. American subscribers interested in its British listing can find UK VPN connections through Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN. All three providers offer British server locations, including streaming-optimized connections through Private Internet Access and several city-level options through ExpressVPN and NordVPN.

However, connecting to a UK VPN server does not guarantee access to the movie. Netflix’s official UK page has returned inconsistent availability messages during verification, although JustWatch UK independently lists the film on Netflix. Furthermore, Netflix can restrict VPN connections to globally licensed content. Its official VPN support documentation explains these limitations. Users must also comply with their VPN provider’s terms and Netflix’s licensing restrictions.

How to watch The Time Traveler’s Wife on Netflix with a VPN

Netflix UK lists The Time Traveler’s Wife, but the streaming service may restrict regional content when it detects a VPN. If Netflix and your VPN provider permit your intended use, follow these steps to check the movie through a UK connection.

1. Choose a VPN provider. Private Internet Access is our first recommendation for its UK streaming-related features, followed by ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
2. Download and install the VPN application from your selected provider’s official website.
3. Connect to the United Kingdom. PIA offers UK Streaming Optimized, while ExpressVPN and NordVPN provide several British server locations.
4. Fully close Netflix, including open browser tabs and applications running in the background.
5. Reopen Netflix after establishing the VPN connection.
6. Sign in using your existing Netflix account credentials.
7. Search for The Time Traveler’s Wife and select the 2009 film starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.
8. Start playback if Netflix displays the movie and your subscription, licensing rights, and applicable terms permit access.

Make sure your VPN application displays the United Kingdom as the selected country. Automatic connection features often choose a nearby server based on speed and latency. For American viewers, that could mean connecting to a US server rather than a British one.

You can also examine the Netflix UK listing for The Time Traveler’s Wife. The film’s Netflix title ID is 70105596, and the page lists Rachel McAdams, Eric Bana, and Arliss Howard among its leading actors.

Be careful not to confuse the movie with The Time Traveler’s Wife television series released in 2022. The series stars Rose Leslie and Theo James, while the 2009 film features Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.

Netflix UK lists English original audio and English subtitles for the movie, so American viewers should not need to rely on a dubbed soundtrack if Netflix permits playback.

Nevertheless, the presence of a UK Netflix listing does not mean Netflix will make the film available to American subscribers using a VPN.

Best VPNs for watching The Time Traveler’s Wife on Netflix

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all offer UK VPN connections. Their main differences involve streaming optimization, server location choices, connection protocols, and network size.

VPN	Server locations in the United Kingdom	Option to try first
Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice)	London, Manchester, Southampton, Tottenham, UK Streaming Optimized	UK Streaming Optimized for permitted local streaming
ExpressVPN	Docklands, East London, London, Manchester, Midlands, Tottenham, Wembley	UK London
NordVPN	Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester; 440+ UK servers advertised	UK automatic connection

These locations come from official provider documentation. They do not represent independently confirmed Netflix playback results.

Although each provider can establish a connection using a British IP address, Netflix may detect VPN traffic and restrict the titles available through the connection.

1. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is our Editor’s Choice because it offers several clearly documented British server locations, a dedicated streaming-optimized connection, and support for flexible VPN protocols.

According to PIA’s official server location directory, the provider offers five UK connection options.

UK server locations and streaming features

PIA currently lists UK London, UK Manchester, UK Southampton, UK Tottenham, and UK Streaming Optimized.

The four city-level locations provide users with a choice of British endpoints for encrypted browsing and online privacy. UK Streaming Optimized is the most relevant option for permitted streaming because PIA specifically configures these servers for video streaming performance.

For legitimate streaming activities in the UK, UK Streaming Optimized is a sensible starting point. If that connection experiences ordinary network problems, London, Manchester, Southampton, and Tottenham offer documented alternatives.

However, streaming optimization only concerns network performance. It does not guarantee that Netflix will display The Time Traveler’s Wife or any other regionally licensed movie.

Physical and virtual server information

Private Internet Access distinguishes between physical and virtual server locations.

With a physical location, the server hardware and registered IP address generally operate within the same country. Virtual locations provide an IP address associated with one country while physically hosting the server elsewhere.

The United Kingdom does not appear in PIA’s current official virtual server location list.

PIA therefore does not currently identify its UK locations as virtual locations in that documentation. However, its general server directory does not disclose the exact physical address of each individual endpoint.

Physical location can influence latency. A connection between the eastern United States and London may perform differently from a connection originating on the West Coast.

How to select a UK server in PIA

PIA includes a searchable server directory in its Windows, macOS, and other supported applications.

Open the application, sign in, and select VPN SERVER to display the available connection locations.

Search for UK or Streaming, then select UK Streaming Optimized or one of the documented British cities. Connect and confirm that the application displays an active VPN connection.

For permitted streaming in the United Kingdom, UK Streaming Optimized provides a logical starting point. UK London is a practical alternative for ordinary connection troubleshooting.

The application also allows users to save frequently selected locations as favorites.

WireGuard and OpenVPN performance

Private Internet Access supports WireGuard and OpenVPN, two widely used VPN protocols.

WireGuard uses a lightweight architecture designed to reduce processing overhead and support efficient encrypted connections. OpenVPN provides a mature alternative with broad compatibility across devices and networks.

On supported desktop applications, users can find the protocol selector in Settings.

WireGuard is generally worth testing first when connection efficiency matters. If your network interferes with WireGuard traffic, OpenVPN provides another option.

Actual streaming performance depends on internet speed, Wi-Fi quality, routing, network congestion, and server load.

Neither WireGuard nor OpenVPN changes Netflix’s content licensing decisions.

PIA streaming troubleshooting and restrictions

PIA’s official streaming support guide recommends clearing browsing data, reconnecting the VPN, and updating the application when users encounter ordinary streaming connection problems.

If UK Streaming Optimized becomes unstable, users can test another documented British endpoint for connectivity issues.

There is also an important contractual limitation. PIA explicitly prohibits using its service to circumvent geographic restrictions imposed by content providers.

The company instructs subscribers to use streaming servers in the country where they are physically located. Therefore, American users should not interpret PIA’s UK server availability as permission to bypass Netflix’s geographic licensing restrictions.

Review the PIA Terms of Service before connecting.

For legitimate privacy protection and permitted streaming activity, PIA offers a useful combination of British server choices, streaming-focused infrastructure, and flexible VPN protocols.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN ranks second because it provides seven officially documented British server locations and supports multiple connection protocols.

The official ExpressVPN server directory lists UK Docklands, UK East London, UK London, UK Manchester, UK Midlands, UK Tottenham, and UK Wembley.

ExpressVPN server locations in the UK

ExpressVPN’s British network offers several London-area connections alongside Manchester and the Midlands.

UK London is a sensible manual starting point for general British VPN use. UK Docklands, East London, Tottenham, and Wembley provide additional London-area alternatives.

Manchester and the Midlands give users further geographical choices.

These options can help when diagnosing ordinary connection problems. For example, users may find that a different endpoint provides more stable routing during periods of network congestion.

However, selecting another city does not guarantee that Netflix will display a movie restricted by regional licensing.

Physical and virtual server infrastructure

ExpressVPN operates both physical and virtual locations worldwide.

A virtual server location provides an IP address associated with the selected country while hosting the underlying hardware in another country.

The United Kingdom does not appear in ExpressVPN’s current virtual server location list.

The provider states that locations outside its virtual server list use infrastructure physically located in the specified country.

Therefore, ExpressVPN’s published British server locations do not carry its virtual-location designation.

This infrastructure arrangement can influence latency and routing, although physical hosting does not establish Netflix compatibility.

How to connect through ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN provides a location selector that allows users to choose a British endpoint manually.

Open the application, sign in, and select the VPN location picker.

Search for United Kingdom or UK, then choose London, Manchester, Midlands, or another available location.

Connect and confirm that ExpressVPN displays an active connection.

ExpressVPN also offers Smart Location, which chooses a server based on factors such as speed, latency, and distance.

However, Smart Location does not necessarily select the United Kingdom. If you specifically need a British connection for an authorized purpose, select the destination manually.

Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN

ExpressVPN supports Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN on compatible applications and devices.

Lightway is ExpressVPN’s proprietary protocol, designed for efficient encrypted networking and reliable connections.

WireGuard offers a lightweight alternative, while OpenVPN provides widely supported UDP and TCP options.

The provider’s official directory lists Lightway UDP, Lightway TCP, WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP, and OpenVPN TCP support for its British locations.

However, protocol availability can vary according to the operating system and application version.

For ordinary streaming connectivity, automatic protocol selection provides a convenient starting point. Users experiencing network instability can test another available protocol.

Streaming performance and troubleshooting

ExpressVPN’s multiple British locations provide flexibility when choosing a UK connection.

However, actual performance depends on the user’s internet speed, device capabilities, routing, and server congestion.

American subscribers connecting to the United Kingdom may experience additional latency because their traffic crosses the Atlantic.

If a permitted streaming session suffers from buffering, update ExpressVPN, test another documented British location, or choose another supported protocol.

ExpressVPN also states that its service should not serve as a means of copyright circumvention. Users must follow applicable content provider terms and legal requirements.

Netflix may recognize the connection regardless of its speed or stability. ExpressVPN cannot guarantee access to The Time Traveler’s Wife through Netflix UK.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN ranks third in our comparison, although it offers the largest advertised UK server network of the three providers.

According to the official NordVPN UK server page, the company advertises more than 440 British servers.

NordVPN server locations in the United Kingdom

NordVPN documents four British cities: Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester.

Users can select the United Kingdom directly from the map or country list, allowing the application to choose a suitable endpoint automatically.

For greater control, NordVPN also allows users to choose a specific city through the available location controls.

London is a sensible manual starting point, while Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow provide alternatives for connection testing.

The advertised server count indicates the size of NordVPN’s UK network. However, it does not mean that every endpoint is individually selectable or that all servers can access any particular Netflix title.

NordVPN does not provide a complete individual hardware-hosting breakdown for every UK server on its country page. Users should avoid assuming more precise physical infrastructure details than the company documents.

How to connect to a UK NordVPN server

Open the NordVPN application and sign in to your account.

Find the United Kingdom on the interactive map or country list, then select it to establish an automatic connection.

If you prefer manual selection, expand the country options and choose Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, or Manchester.

Confirm that the application displays an active VPN connection before continuing with other online activities.

Automatic connection is convenient for users who do not need a particular city. Manual selection provides more control when diagnosing network performance.

NordLynx and streaming performance

NordVPN uses NordLynx, a VPN protocol based on WireGuard.

NordLynx aims to provide efficient encrypted networking with relatively low processing overhead.

Streaming performance depends on sustained download speeds, connection stability, latency, and network congestion.

For American users, connecting to London or another British city introduces additional geographical distance compared with a nearby US server.

Nevertheless, a stable international connection can still support ordinary video streaming when bandwidth and routing are sufficient.

If a connection becomes unstable, reconnect to the United Kingdom or select another documented city.

How NordVPN SmartPlay works

NordVPN includes SmartPlay, a streaming-related feature that combines VPN encryption with DNS functionality.

According to NordVPN’s official SmartPlay documentation, SmartPlay activates automatically whenever users connect through the NordVPN application.

Users do not need to install SmartPlay separately or enable additional settings.

SmartPlay works alongside the VPN connection to support secure access to legitimate streaming content.

Unlike standalone SmartDNS, a complete NordVPN connection also encrypts internet traffic and changes the user’s visible public IP address.

However, SmartPlay does not override Netflix’s regional licensing decisions or guarantee access to The Time Traveler’s Wife.

NordVPN troubleshooting and restrictions

If NordVPN cannot maintain a stable British connection, disconnect and reconnect before changing additional settings.

Users can select another available UK server, choose a different documented city, or review the selected VPN protocol.

Make sure another VPN application is not interfering with network routing.

NordVPN also states that users must not employ SmartPlay or related services to violate copyright laws or applicable restrictions.

Even when NordVPN successfully connects to the United Kingdom, Netflix may recognize the VPN and restrict access to regionally licensed movies.

What to do if The Time Traveler’s Wife does not appear

The Time Traveler’s Wife may not appear in Netflix search results even when its UK catalog listing exists. Regional licensing, VPN detection, account settings, and connection problems can all affect the results.

For permitted VPN connection troubleshooting, follow these eight steps:

1. Close Netflix completely, including open browser tabs and background applications.
2. Disconnect from your current VPN connection.
3. Reconnect to the United Kingdom if your intended VPN use complies with applicable terms.
4. Try another available British server or location if the connection itself is unstable.
5. Clear Netflix cookies and your browser cache to remove outdated session information.
6. Open an incognito or private browser window to test a fresh session.
7. Reopen Netflix and sign in using your existing account credentials.
8. Search for The Time Traveler’s Wife and confirm that you have selected the 2009 movie.

Private Internet Access users can compare UK Streaming Optimized with London, Manchester, Southampton, or Tottenham for permitted connection testing.

ExpressVPN offers Docklands, East London, London, Manchester, Midlands, Tottenham, and Wembley. NordVPN users can choose among London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

These alternatives can help diagnose ordinary connectivity problems, but switching servers does not guarantee access to a regionally licensed Netflix movie.

Also check that you are searching for the correct title. The Time Traveler’s Wife is both a 2009 movie and a separate 2022 television series. The movie stars Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.

Netflix’s official missing-title troubleshooting guide explains that licensing, maturity settings, language preferences, and VPN detection can affect search results.

If Netflix recognizes a VPN and restricts the catalog, disconnecting the VPN may restore normal access to movies licensed for your physical location.

PIA also prohibits geographic restriction circumvention, while other VPN providers require users to follow applicable laws and streaming service terms.

Netflix may detect the VPN

A VPN changes the public IP address websites and streaming platforms see when you connect to the internet.

For example, connecting to a British VPN server can make your public IP address appear to originate from the United Kingdom.

However, Netflix does not automatically grant access to every movie licensed in the UK merely because the connection uses a British IP address.

Netflix negotiates distribution rights separately across countries. The Time Traveler’s Wife can appear in the British catalog while remaining unavailable through Netflix US.

When Netflix detects a VPN, it may restrict the visible catalog to movies and television shows with worldwide licensing rights.

Subscribers may encounter missing titles, unexpected search results, or playback errors even when the VPN connection itself works correctly.

Netflix explains these restrictions in its official VPN support guidance.

Neither a streaming-optimized server nor a specialized VPN protocol guarantees that Netflix will allow The Time Traveler’s Wife to play through a UK connection from the United States.

Can you use a Netflix ad-supported plan with a VPN?

No. Netflix states that its ad-supported experience does not support VPN connections.

Subscribers using an ad-supported plan may encounter playback errors when Netflix detects an active VPN.

Netflix recommends disconnecting the VPN to restore normal streaming.

An ad-free subscription avoids this specific restriction, but it does not eliminate regional licensing rules or Netflix’s VPN detection.

Even on an ad-free plan, Netflix may limit the catalog to globally licensed movies when it recognizes a VPN connection.

Therefore, upgrading to an ad-free subscription does not guarantee access to The Time Traveler’s Wife through Netflix UK.

For further information, consult Netflix’s official VPN policy.

Does changing the VPN location change your Netflix account?

No. Connecting to a UK VPN server does not automatically change your Netflix account country.

Your email address, password, profiles, subscription, and billing information remain associated with your existing account.

A VPN changes your visible public IP address rather than directly modifying your registered Netflix account information.

Netflix catalogs differ between countries because content providers license movies and television programs for individual regions.

However, changing your visible IP location does not guarantee access to the complete catalog associated with another country.

Netflix may also recognize VPN traffic and limit regional titles.

You can find more information in Netflix’s account country guidance.

American viewers who cannot watch The Time Traveler’s Wife through Netflix can check JustWatch’s current US streaming alternatives.

At the time of research, JustWatch listed fuboTV and several Paramount+ subscription options, including Paramount+ Premium, Essential, and associated channels.

Digital rental and purchase options were also available through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home.

These officially licensed alternatives may provide a more straightforward way to watch the movie without relying on another country’s Netflix catalog.

Which VPN should you use?

Private Internet Access is our first recommendation for British VPN features because it offers UK London, Manchester, Southampton, Tottenham, and UK Streaming Optimized. Its WireGuard and OpenVPN support also provides flexibility for secure connections and troubleshooting. However, PIA explicitly prohibits circumventing content providers’ geographic restrictions, so American subscribers should not interpret its British servers as permission to bypass Netflix’s regional licensing rules.

ExpressVPN ranks second with seven documented British server locations, including several London-area options, Manchester, and the Midlands, alongside Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN support where available. NordVPN follows with more than 440 advertised UK servers, documented connections in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester, NordLynx, and automatically activated SmartPlay. Both providers offer useful features for legitimate VPN use, but neither guarantees access to a particular Netflix title.

As of October 13, 2026, The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009) is unavailable on Netflix US, while Netflix UK’s catalog and JustWatch UK list the movie. Individual Netflix UK page requests have returned inconsistent availability messages, so viewers should verify the listing directly before relying on it. Regional licensing, VPN detection, and provider terms may prevent playback. American viewers can also choose officially licensed US streaming alternatives.
