NordVPN Launches New NordProtect Feature to Protect Against Identity Theft

NordVPN, the company behind the popular virtual private network service, has announced a new feature called NordProtect that aims to help you protect against identity theft.

NordProtect is available for all NordVPN Prime users in the US, with more support coming soon, NordVPN said.

So what exactly does NordProtect do?

In addition to providing identity recovery and restoration services, like up to $1 million to cover legal costs or lost wages if you’re the victim of identity theft, NordProtect monitors the dark web 24/7 for signs that your Social Security number, credit card number, or other sensitive information has been leaked. If NordProtect finds a potential security issue, it sends you an alert.

The service also offers credit monitoring to help you keep an eye on your credit score and be notified about any suspicious credit activity. And it provides cyber extortion protection, giving you up to $100,000 to cover expert assistance and payments in response to cyber threats such as deleting or releasing your stolen information.

Tomas Sinicki, managing director of NordProtect, said that while there are plenty of security tools out there, NordProtect brings a new focus to protecting identity and personal data.

“Cybersecurity is not only about protecting your devices and networks — it’s about protecting the most valuable thing you have, which is your identity,” Sinicki said in a statement. “Identity theft is a global problem, and its frequency is on the rise, which is why enhancing current features and adding new tools to NordProtect is a continuous effort.”

NordProtect is the latest in a line of security-focused services and features from NordVPN, which initially launched as a consumer VPN service in 2012. Last year, NordVPN introduced a set of subscription-based cyber insurance packages in the US and Europe and in 2023, the company launched Threat Protection Pro, a paid add-on that blocks malicious websites, trackers, ads, and scans downloads for malware.

While the feature is, for now, included only with NordVPN Prime, a subscription tier that starts at $7.89 per month, you also get access to NordVPN’s VPN, encrypted cloud storage, and password manager.
