atlas vpn shuts down

In a surprising turn of events, Atlas VPN, a freemium service, announced its closure on March 25, 2024.

This decision marks a significant turn as it pivots towards a strategic consolidation with NordVPN, its sister company.

It suggests the move aims at providing exceptional services and robust online security to existing users.

Why is Atlas VPN shutting down?

Atlas VPN cites several reasons for its closure in its official blog post mainly the increasing competitiveness of the cybersecurity market due to new entrants.

Another reason for closure is the high costs associated with maintaining a solid service, which makes it challenging for the company to stay afloat.

Additionally, the ever-evolving technological demands of the cybersecurity industry are proving to be a huge burden on Atlas VPN’s resources.

“These factors have led us to conclude that continuing to operate Atlas VPN is not sustainable in the long term,” the company said.

What next for current Atlas VPN users?

Atlas VPN has outlined a clear transition plan for its paid users to NordVPN. All premium accounts will remain active for the remainder of their subscription period at no additional cost.

This move guarantees access to NordVPN’s premium features, including comprehensive security features expected to meet or exceed Atlas VPN’s standards.

The transition will begin on April 24, 2024, with instructions provided for setting up a new NordVPN account. Subscribers through app stores will have their subscriptions managed by the respective platforms.

However, Apple App Store subscribers are set to receive refunds for the remaining time on their premium subscription and will see their account terminated on April 25, 2024.

Unlike premium subscribers, free users will be expected to purchase any NordVPN plan. The company has offered great discounts to help entice them with the transition.

For those opting out of the move to NordVPN, Atlas VPN has provided a support channel for assistance. This strategic move aims to minimize disruptions and maintain the high standard of service that Atlas VPN users enjoy.

Moving on

Atlas VPN’s shutdown will be devastating to all its users. Apart from its free plan, the vendor is known to offer some of the cheapest prices on the market.

Fortunately, there are other alternatives around that offer better value for money than NordVPN. Notable mentions include Private Internet Access (PIA), PrivateVPN, and Surfshark.
