Anthropic launches Claude for Word beta, bringing tracked AI edits into Microsoft documents

Anthropic has launched Claude for Word in beta, adding its AI assistant directly inside Microsoft Word instead of forcing users to jump between apps. The add-in lets people review, redline, draft, and revise documents from a sidebar while keeping edits inside the original file.

The key feature is how Claude handles changes. Anthropic says edits appear as native Word tracked changes, so users can accept or reject them in Word’s review pane just like they would with a human editor. The company also says Claude preserves heading styles, numbering, bullets, and defined terms while working inside the document.

That makes this launch more practical than the usual copy-and-paste AI workflow. Instead of rewriting text in a browser and pasting it back into Word, users can select a passage, ask for a revision, and review the result in place without breaking formatting.

What Claude for Word can do

Anthropic says Claude for Word can read and respond to comment threads, edit the anchored text as tracked changes, and then reply in the same thread with what it changed. That could appeal to legal, consulting, finance, and policy teams that already rely on comments and review cycles inside Word.

The add-in also supports drafting in existing templates. Anthropic says Claude can write in a document’s heading and bullet styles, while citing back to source documents a user uploads. It can also flag inconsistent defined terms, broken cross-references, and numbering errors across a full document.

Another notable part of the rollout is cross-app context. Anthropic says one conversation can pass context across its Word, PowerPoint, and Excel add-ins, which means users can work across a report, presentation, and spreadsheet in the same session. Anthropic highlighted that broader workflow in earlier material for Excel and PowerPoint as well.

Availability and supported versions

Claude for Word is available in beta for Claude Team and Enterprise plans, according to Anthropic’s product page and help documentation. That means this is not a broad consumer rollout yet, even though the add-in itself is publicly listed in Microsoft Marketplace.

Anthropic’s support page says the add-in works with Word on the web, Word on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription and Version 2205 or later, and Word on Mac Version 16.61 or later. Users can install it from Microsoft Marketplace, then sign in with a Claude account inside Word.

For organizations, admins can deploy the add-in through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Anthropic says admins need to allow access to the Office Store, then add the “Claude by Anthropic for Word” add-in through integrated apps.

Why this matters

Anthropic has spent the past year pushing Claude deeper into workplace software instead of keeping it as a standalone chat tool. The company already offers Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint, and Claude for Word fills in a major gap for document-heavy work.

The timing also matters because Microsoft already has strong AI integration in Word through Microsoft 365 Copilot. Anthropic is trying a different pitch here: tracked edits, template-aware writing, comment-thread handling, and shared context across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

For teams that spend most of their day inside documents, that may be the real test. If Claude can help tighten clauses, clean up arguments, resolve comments, and keep formatting intact without adding review chaos, it could become more useful than a general chatbot tab sitting off to the side.
