How to Watch Good Will Hunting on Netflix in the US with a VPN (2026)

Good Will Hunting (1997) is currently available on Netflix in Italy, where the movie appears under the title Will Hunting – Genio ribelle. The official Netflix Italy page confirms that the drama starring Matt Damon, Robin Williams, and Ben Affleck is part of the country’s streaming catalog, with English audio and subtitles.

However, Good Will Hunting is not currently available on Netflix US. If you’re in the United States, you can try connecting to an Italian VPN server using Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN. All three providers offer Italian IP addresses.

Keep in mind that using a VPN does not guarantee access to another country’s Netflix catalog. According to Netflix’s VPN guidelines, the service may recognize VPN connections and limit users to movies and shows with worldwide licensing rights.

How to watch Good Will Hunting on Netflix with a VPN

Since Netflix Italy currently carries Good Will Hunting, you can try connecting to an Italian VPN server before opening Netflix. Follow these steps:

1. Choose a VPN. Private Internet Access is our first recommendation, followed by ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
2. Download and install the VPN app.
3. Connect to a server in Italy.
4. Fully close Netflix if it is already open.
5. Reopen Netflix after the VPN connects.
6. Sign in with your existing Netflix account.
7. Search for Good Will Hunting.
8. Start playback if the title appears.

Italy is a suitable country to try because the Netflix Italy listing currently displays Good Will Hunting without an unavailability warning. The page also confirms English and Italian audio, English and Italian subtitles, and offline downloads.

If the movie does not appear under its English name, try searching for Will Hunting – Genio ribelle. This is the title Netflix uses in Italy. However, Netflix may still recognize your VPN connection and prevent playback.

Best VPNs for watching Good Will Hunting on Netflix

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all provide Italian VPN locations. PIA includes a dedicated streaming-optimized option, while ExpressVPN and NordVPN offer several cities to choose from.

VPN	Italy locations	Option to try first
Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice)	Milano, Naples (virtual, hosted in Germany), IT Streaming Optimized	IT Streaming Optimized
ExpressVPN	Cosenza, Milan, Naples (virtual, hosted in Germany)	Cosenza
NordVPN	Milan, Rome, Palermo	Automatic Italy server selection

These locations come from the providers’ official server directories. Although all three services provide Italian IP addresses, none guarantees access to Good Will Hunting through Netflix.

1. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is our Editor’s Choice for Good Will Hunting because it offers a dedicated Italy Streaming Optimized location alongside standard Italian VPN servers in Milano and Naples.

According to the official PIA server directory, the available Italian locations include IT Milano, IT Naples, and IT Streaming Optimized.

Start with IT Streaming Optimized. PIA provides this location specifically for streaming performance, making it the first connection worth trying when accessing Italian streaming services.

To find it, open the PIA application, navigate to the server list, and search for Italy. Select IT Streaming Optimized and connect before reopening Netflix.

If Good Will Hunting does not appear, disconnect and try Milano. Naples provides another Italian IP location if you need an alternative connection.

There is an important distinction between PIA’s Italian servers. According to its virtual server documentation, the IT Naples location uses virtual infrastructure physically hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.

This means selecting Naples gives you an Italian IP address while the physical server operates in Germany. Netflix generally sees the Italian IP address, although this does not guarantee access to the Italian catalog.

PIA does not list Milano as a virtual location in the same documentation. However, it does not specify the physical hosting arrangement of the dedicated IT Streaming Optimized connection, so users should not assume that every Italian endpoint uses identical infrastructure.

PIA also supports WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols. WireGuard is a practical starting point for streaming because its lightweight design can help maintain efficient VPN connections.

If Netflix does not display Good Will Hunting, try switching between IT Streaming Optimized, Milano, and Naples. Clearing browser cookies or changing VPN protocols may also help resolve connection problems.

The provider offers additional recommendations in its streaming support guide, including reconnecting to another server and keeping the VPN application updated.

Even with a streaming-optimized connection, Netflix may still recognize PIA’s IP addresses and restrict access to Italian titles. PIA cannot guarantee that Good Will Hunting will appear or play.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is another option for connecting to Italy. The provider maintains three Italian server locations, giving users alternatives when one connection experiences problems.

The official ExpressVPN server directory currently lists Italy – Cosenza, Italy – Milan, and Italy – Naples.

Start with Cosenza. ExpressVPN identifies this location as part of its upgraded 40Gbps server infrastructure, making it a practical first connection to try for streaming and other bandwidth-intensive activities.

To connect, open ExpressVPN, search for Italy in the location list, and select Cosenza. Wait until the application confirms the connection before reopening Netflix.

If Good Will Hunting does not appear, disconnect and try Milan or Naples. These locations provide alternative Italian IP addresses without requiring you to switch countries.

However, there is an important difference between ExpressVPN’s Italian locations. According to its virtual server documentation, Naples uses virtual server infrastructure hosted in Germany.

That means selecting Naples provides an Italian IP address, while the physical server operates in Germany. This arrangement can affect routing and latency, but it still allows websites to see an Italian IP location.

ExpressVPN does not list Cosenza or Milan among its virtual locations. The provider’s documentation therefore distinguishes those connections from Naples, although it does not specify the hardware details of every individual server.

The ExpressVPN Italy page also confirms support for all three Italian locations and describes its high-capacity server infrastructure.

ExpressVPN supports Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN at its listed Italian locations, although protocol availability may depend on the device and application version.

If you experience buffering or connection problems, try switching between Cosenza and Milan before testing Naples. You can also change VPN protocols if your device supports more than one option.

However, ExpressVPN cannot guarantee that Netflix will display Good Will Hunting. Netflix may recognize its IP addresses as VPN traffic and restrict movies licensed specifically for Italy.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN offers another way to connect to Italy, with servers in Milan, Rome, and Palermo and automatic connection options.

According to NordVPN’s official Italy server page, the provider currently advertises more than 60 Italian servers across its network.

For the first connection, open NordVPN, select Italy, and allow the application to choose an available server automatically. This is a convenient starting point if you do not have a preferred city.

You can also choose Milan manually. If Netflix does not display Good Will Hunting, switch to Rome or Palermo before trying automatic server selection again.

NordVPN’s published Italian server count may change as the company expands or adjusts its network. Its official server directory confirms the three cities but does not provide physical hosting details for every individual endpoint.

NordVPN also includes SmartPlay, a feature that combines VPN encryption with DNS technology to improve streaming compatibility while maintaining a secure connection.

According to NordVPN’s SmartPlay documentation, the feature activates automatically when you connect through the NordVPN application.

You do not need to enable SmartPlay separately, install another extension, or change your DNS settings. The feature runs in the background as part of the regular VPN connection.

NordVPN also offers NordLynx, a protocol based on WireGuard technology that aims to provide efficient encrypted connections.

If the movie loads slowly, reconnecting to another Italian server may help. Your actual speed will depend on your internet connection, distance from the server, and current network conditions.

However, SmartPlay does not guarantee access to Good Will Hunting or any other region-specific Netflix title. Netflix may still recognize NordVPN and restrict the available catalog.

What to do if Good Will Hunting does not appear

If Netflix does not display Good Will Hunting after you connect to Italy, your browser may retain previous location information, or Netflix may have recognized the VPN connection. Try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Close Netflix completely.
2. Disconnect from the VPN.
3. Reconnect to Italy.
4. Try another server or location in the same country.
5. Clear Netflix cookies and your browser cache.
6. Open a private or incognito browser window.
7. Reopen Netflix and sign in again.
8. Search for Good Will Hunting.

Private Internet Access users should start with IT Streaming Optimized, followed by Milano or Naples. ExpressVPN users can switch between Cosenza, Milan, and Naples. NordVPN users can reconnect automatically or select Milan, Rome, or Palermo.

You can also search for Will Hunting – Genio ribelle, the Italian title Netflix uses for Good Will Hunting. Make sure you select the 1997 movie directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Matt Damon and Robin Williams.

If the movie still does not appear, Netflix may be restricting its catalog because of VPN detection. The Netflix missing titles guide explains other possible reasons, including licensing changes, maturity restrictions, and language preferences.

Netflix may detect the VPN

A VPN changes the public IP address Netflix sees when your device connects to the service. For example, connecting to an Italian VPN location generally gives Netflix an Italian IP address instead of your usual US address.

However, an Italian IP address does not guarantee access to the country’s Netflix catalog. Netflix may recognize that the connection comes from a VPN provider and limit which movies and shows appear.

According to Netflix’s official VPN support page, users connecting through a VPN may only see titles for which Netflix has worldwide distribution rights.

That means Good Will Hunting may remain unavailable in your Netflix search results even when your VPN application shows Italy as the connected country.

Trying another Italian server may resolve some connection problems, but Netflix can still restrict regional playback. No VPN provider guarantees access to every Netflix catalog.

Can you use a Netflix ad-supported plan with a VPN?

No. Netflix currently states that its ad-supported experience does not support VPN connections.

If you subscribe to a Netflix plan with ads, you may encounter playback restrictions or VPN-related errors when connecting through Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, or NordVPN.

Netflix confirms this limitation in its VPN support documentation. To use an ad-supported subscription normally, disconnect your VPN.

An ad-free Netflix subscription avoids this particular restriction, but Netflix may still detect VPN connections and limit access to region-specific movies.

Does changing the VPN location change your Netflix account?

No. Connecting to an Italian VPN server does not change your Netflix email address, password, profiles, or existing account credentials.

The VPN changes the public IP address Netflix sees. It does not automatically convert your US Netflix subscription into an Italian account or modify your login information.

You can continue signing in with your existing Netflix credentials. However, the movies and shows Netflix displays may depend on regional licensing restrictions, account settings, and whether the service recognizes your VPN connection.

The Netflix US title page does not currently establish US streaming availability for Good Will Hunting. Current US streaming listings instead identify Apple TV, Paramount+, and MGM+ among the available services.

When you disconnect from the VPN, Netflix generally recognizes your regular internet location again without changing your Netflix account settings.

Which VPN should you use?

Private Internet Access is our first recommendation because it offers a dedicated IT Streaming Optimized location alongside Italian servers in Milano and Naples. These options give you several connections to try, although Netflix may still detect the VPN.

ExpressVPN is a useful alternative thanks to its locations in Cosenza, Milan, and Naples, including upgraded server infrastructure in Cosenza. NordVPN also offers more than 60 Italian servers and includes SmartPlay, which activates automatically when you connect.

Netflix Italy currently carries Good Will Hunting (1997), making Italy the verified international region for this guide. However, licensing agreements, VPN detection, and server availability can change, so connecting to Italy does not guarantee playback from the United States.
