How to Watch Girl, Interrupted on Netflix in the US with a VPN (2026)

Girl, Interrupted (1999) is listed on Netflix in the United Kingdom. The official Netflix UK movie page features the psychological drama directed by James Mangold and starring Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Clea DuVall, Brittany Murphy, and Whoopi Goldberg. Based on Susanna Kaysen’s memoir, the film follows a young woman who enters a psychiatric hospital during the late 1960s and develops complicated relationships with the other patients.

Unfortunately, Girl, Interrupted is not currently available through Netflix US. According to JustWatch’s US streaming information, American viewers can watch the film through Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel or free with advertisements on Tubi. Netflix UK lists the movie in its subscription catalog, and Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all provide British VPN connections.

However, connecting to a UK VPN server does not guarantee access to Netflix’s British catalog. Netflix may identify VPN traffic and limit the available titles to content with worldwide streaming rights. Its official VPN viewing policy also confirms that VPN connections do not work with ad-supported subscriptions. Users should follow Netflix’s regional licensing rules and their VPN provider’s terms before attempting to access international content.

How to watch Girl, Interrupted on Netflix with a VPN

Netflix UK currently lists Girl, Interrupted, but actual playback depends on your physical location, subscription, account settings, and Netflix’s regional restrictions. The following steps explain how to check the movie using an eligible VPN connection.

1. Choose a VPN provider. Private Internet Access is our first recommendation because of its documented British locations and dedicated streaming-optimized connection, followed by ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
2. Download and install the official VPN application on your Windows PC, Mac, smartphone, or another supported device.
3. Connect to a United Kingdom server if your physical location and provider terms permit it. PIA offers UK Streaming Optimized, ExpressVPN provides seven British locations, and NordVPN operates servers in four UK cities.
4. Fully close Netflix before changing your connection. Exit the Netflix application or close all browser tabs running the streaming service.
5. Reopen Netflix after the VPN establishes a stable internet connection.
6. Sign in using your existing Netflix account and select the viewing profile you normally use.
7. Search for Girl, Interrupted and confirm that the result identifies the 1999 film starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.
8. Start playback if Netflix displays the movie and your location, subscription, and applicable service terms permit access.

You can compare the search result with the official Girl, Interrupted Netflix UK listing. The page identifies the 1999 drama and lists English original audio, Spanish, French, Hindi, Polish, and Brazilian Portuguese audio options.

Available subtitles include Arabic, English, French, Hindi, Polish, and Ukrainian. The options you see may depend on your profile language, device, and Netflix’s current licensing arrangements.

Girl, Interrupted runs for approximately 127 minutes. Winona Ryder portrays Susanna Kaysen, an 18-year-old who enters a psychiatric hospital after experiencing serious emotional difficulties. Inside, she meets Lisa Rowe, played by Angelina Jolie, whose unpredictable behavior influences Susanna’s experience.

The supporting cast includes Clea DuVall as Georgina, Brittany Murphy as Daisy, Elisabeth Moss as Polly, Whoopi Goldberg as Valerie, and Vanessa Redgrave as Dr. Wick.

Angelina Jolie won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. The film explores friendship, personal identity, psychiatric treatment, and the challenges of growing up during a period of major social change.

Make sure you select the 1999 movie directed by James Mangold. Other psychological dramas may appear in Netflix’s recommendations, but they have separate distribution agreements.

Opening the movie’s official Netflix page does not automatically authorize playback. Netflix may recognize an active VPN and restrict the available catalog. If Girl, Interrupted does not appear, follow Netflix’s troubleshooting recommendations rather than assuming another server will guarantee access.

Best VPNs for watching Girl, Interrupted on Netflix

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all offer United Kingdom VPN connections. Their differences include available server locations, streaming-related features, connection protocols, and network infrastructure.

VPN	Server locations in the United Kingdom	Option to try first
Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice)	UK London, UK Manchester, UK Southampton, UK Tottenham, UK Streaming Optimized	UK Streaming Optimized, where permitted
ExpressVPN	UK – Docklands, UK – East London, UK – London, UK – Manchester, UK – Midlands, UK – Tottenham, UK – Wembley	UK – London
NordVPN	Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester; 853 UK servers advertised	Automatic United Kingdom connection

PIA’s official October 2026 directory lists five British connection choices, including a dedicated streaming endpoint. ExpressVPN publishes seven UK locations, while NordVPN advertises 853 British servers across four cities.

These servers can encrypt internet traffic and provide British IP addresses. However, their availability does not guarantee that Netflix will show Girl, Interrupted to subscribers physically located in the United States.

1. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is our Editor’s Choice because it documents several British server locations, provides a dedicated streaming-optimized option, and supports flexible VPN settings. Its official support resources also explain important restrictions users should understand before connecting to streaming services.

According to the official PIA server directory, updated October 20, 2026, the provider lists UK London, UK Manchester, UK Southampton, UK Tottenham, and UK Streaming Optimized.

UK Streaming Optimized is particularly relevant for people who want a connection configured for ordinary streaming performance. PIA offers specialized servers to support stable connections with compatible streaming services.

However, a streaming-optimized server does not guarantee that Netflix will display a particular movie licensed for the United Kingdom.

For users physically located in the UK and authorized to use the connection, UK Streaming Optimized provides a sensible starting option. UK London offers a general-purpose alternative, while Manchester, Southampton, and Tottenham provide additional choices when users experience ordinary network problems.

To select a British location, open the PIA application and click the VPN SERVER section. Search for United Kingdom or enter streaming to find the optimized endpoint. Choose your preferred server and activate the connection.

The PIA Windows application guide explains how to navigate the server selector, manage connection settings, and check whether the VPN is active.

Users can also review server latency information before connecting. A lower-latency server may improve responsiveness, although network congestion and routing conditions can influence actual results.

PIA supports WireGuard and OpenVPN, giving users two established VPN protocols.

WireGuard uses an efficient design with relatively low connection overhead. It is a practical starting option for users who prioritize responsiveness and stable encrypted networking.

OpenVPN offers another established protocol for networks, routers, or devices that behave differently with WireGuard.

Changing protocols may improve ordinary connection stability, but it cannot override Netflix’s regional licensing agreements or guarantee access to the British catalog.

PIA also distinguishes between physical and virtual VPN infrastructure. A virtual server location provides an IP address associated with one country while hosting the physical server in another.

According to PIA’s official virtual server documentation, the provider publishes a list of countries where it uses this arrangement.

The United Kingdom does not appear on its virtual server country list. PIA therefore does not identify its British connections as virtual locations hosted outside the UK.

However, the documentation does not establish the precise physical data center address for every individual British server.

Actual connection performance depends on internet speed, Wi-Fi stability, server congestion, device capabilities, and network routing.

For example, a server with relatively low latency may feel more responsive, but another endpoint may provide steadier performance during periods of heavy network traffic.

If ordinary streaming becomes unstable, PIA recommends restarting the connection, clearing browser cookies and cached files, and making sure the application uses an updated version.

The company’s official streaming support guide explains these troubleshooting procedures.

There is also an important usage restriction. PIA instructs customers to connect to a VPN server matching the country where they are physically located. The company prohibits using its service to circumvent geographic restrictions imposed by content providers.

Consequently, American Netflix subscribers should not interpret PIA’s British server availability as permission to bypass Netflix’s regional licensing rules.

PIA remains a useful privacy service with five documented British locations, a specialized streaming connection, and flexible protocol settings. However, it cannot guarantee that Girl, Interrupted will appear or play through Netflix UK from the United States.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN ranks second because it provides seven officially documented British server locations, supports several modern VPN protocols, and offers straightforward controls for selecting different endpoints.

According to the official ExpressVPN server directory, the provider lists UK – Docklands, UK – East London, UK – London, UK – Manchester, UK – Midlands, UK – Tottenham, and UK – Wembley.

For users authorized to connect through the United Kingdom, UK – London provides a practical starting location. UK – Manchester and UK – East London offer alternatives when the initial endpoint experiences ordinary connectivity problems.

The additional locations give users flexibility when selecting a server based on latency, network congestion, and general connection stability.

To connect, open ExpressVPN and select the VPN location picker. Search for United Kingdom, choose one of the documented locations, and wait until the application confirms an active connection.

ExpressVPN also provides automatic location selection, but this feature may recommend another country. Users who specifically need an authorized British connection should select the United Kingdom manually.

The provider’s UK locations support Lightway UDP, Lightway TCP, WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP, and OpenVPN TCP. Its directory also lists IKEv2 availability on compatible platforms.

Lightway is ExpressVPN’s proprietary VPN protocol. It focuses on efficient encrypted networking and quick reconnection when devices switch between networks.

WireGuard offers another efficient option on supported devices. OpenVPN provides an established alternative for particular routers and network configurations.

Changing the connection protocol can affect speed, latency, responsiveness, and battery consumption. However, no VPN protocol can change the streaming rights that Netflix holds in the United Kingdom.

ExpressVPN also distinguishes physical server locations from virtual infrastructure. Its official virtual server documentation explains that some locations provide an IP address associated with one country while physically hosting the servers elsewhere.

The provider does not identify its British endpoints as virtual locations in its published directory. However, names such as Docklands or Wembley do not establish the exact physical address of an individual server.

For streaming performance, users should prioritize a stable internet connection rather than assume that one server or protocol will always provide the best speeds.

Network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, background downloads, and device limitations can all contribute to slow loading times or buffering.

If Netflix fails to load while ExpressVPN is active, users should verify that their regular internet connection works, restart the streaming application, and check for VPN app updates.

ExpressVPN’s official Netflix troubleshooting documentation explains how to address connection problems and select supported server locations.

The provider instructs customers to connect to a server matching the country where they are physically located. It also restricts using its service to circumvent geographic restrictions imposed by content providers.

This matters for American subscribers. Although ExpressVPN provides seven British server locations, their availability does not establish permission to access movies licensed exclusively for Netflix UK.

Even with an authorized connection, Netflix may recognize VPN traffic and restrict the available titles to content with worldwide streaming rights.

ExpressVPN offers useful encrypted networking and connection options, but it cannot guarantee that Girl, Interrupted will appear or play through Netflix’s British catalog.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN takes third place in our comparison. It provides extensive British server coverage, automatic connection selection, the NordLynx protocol, and SmartPlay functionality.

According to NordVPN’s official UK server page, the provider advertises 853 British servers across Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester.

These four documented cities give users several choices when establishing a British VPN connection. The published server count reflects NordVPN’s advertised inventory at the time of research and may change as the provider updates its infrastructure.

To establish a connection, open NordVPN and select United Kingdom from the country list or map. The application can automatically choose an available server according to network conditions.

Users who prefer a particular city can open the additional country options and manually choose Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, or Manchester.

London provides a practical starting location for eligible connections. Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow offer alternatives when users encounter ordinary network instability.

NordVPN uses NordLynx, its WireGuard-based VPN protocol, to provide efficient encrypted networking. NordLynx aims to reduce protocol overhead while maintaining privacy and connection security.

Actual performance depends on internet speed, distance, server congestion, network routing, and the capabilities of the device running NordVPN.

Another relevant feature is SmartPlay. According to NordVPN’s official SmartPlay documentation, the feature activates automatically whenever users connect through a NordVPN application.

SmartPlay combines VPN encryption with DNS-related functionality to help users access compatible streaming services privately.

It hides the public IP address, encrypts internet traffic, and manages DNS-related functions through the normal VPN connection.

Unlike standalone SmartDNS configurations, SmartPlay requires no separate activation. It operates automatically once the connection starts.

However, SmartPlay does not guarantee that Netflix will display movies licensed exclusively for particular countries.

Netflix may still recognize VPN traffic, restrict the available titles, or return a playback error.

If NordVPN encounters general connectivity problems, users can restart the application, manually select another available UK server, or review the active VPN protocol.

NordVPN also offers specialty configurations for different privacy needs, including Double VPN and Onion Over VPN. These connections should not be confused with servers specifically verified for Netflix playback.

For Girl, Interrupted, NordVPN’s published UK server coverage confirms that the company provides British connections. It does not establish that American Netflix subscribers can access the film through Netflix UK.

What to do if Girl, Interrupted does not appear

Girl, Interrupted may not appear in Netflix search results even when its official British title page exists. Regional licensing, VPN recognition, profile settings, and outdated application information can affect which movies Netflix displays.

1. Close Netflix completely, including all open browser tabs and background application sessions.
2. Disconnect from your current VPN connection.
3. Reconnect to the United Kingdom if your physical location and VPN provider’s terms authorize that connection.
4. Try another officially documented British server when troubleshooting an ordinary network connection problem.
5. Clear Netflix cookies and your browser cache to remove outdated session information.
6. Open a fresh incognito or private browsing window.
7. Reopen Netflix and sign in using your existing account.
8. Search for Girl, Interrupted and confirm that the result identifies the 1999 drama starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.

PIA users can compare UK Streaming Optimized with UK London, UK Manchester, UK Southampton, or UK Tottenham when their physical location and provider terms permit it.

ExpressVPN users can select UK – London, UK – East London, UK – Manchester, or another documented British endpoint. NordVPN users can compare London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

These alternatives may resolve temporary network congestion or ordinary connectivity failures. However, changing VPN servers cannot guarantee access to movies restricted by Netflix’s regional licensing agreements.

Netflix explains in its missing movie troubleshooting guide that movies may disappear because of regional licensing, VPN detection, maturity restrictions, or profile language preferences.

Check that you are searching for the correct film. Girl, Interrupted (1999) stars Winona Ryder as Susanna Kaysen and Angelina Jolie as Lisa Rowe.

The supporting cast includes Clea DuVall, Brittany Murphy, Elisabeth Moss, Whoopi Goldberg, and Vanessa Redgrave. The film uses the same English title in Netflix’s British catalog.

Because the movie contains mature themes involving psychiatric treatment, emotional distress, and self-harm, restrictive Netflix profiles may not display it. Check the profile’s maturity settings if the title remains missing.

If Netflix displays an unsupported VPN or proxy error, follow the platform’s instructions and disconnect the VPN. This may restore access to your regular Netflix US catalog, although Girl, Interrupted will remain unavailable there unless Netflix reacquires the appropriate streaming rights.

Netflix may detect the VPN

A VPN changes the public IP address websites observe by routing internet traffic through a remote server. When someone connects to a British VPN endpoint, websites may identify the connection as originating from the United Kingdom.

However, Netflix does not automatically provide access to the entire British catalog based solely on the apparent IP address.

The streaming service enforces regional licensing agreements and may identify traffic coming from commercial VPN infrastructure.

According to Netflix’s official VPN and proxy error guidance, viewers may receive an error asking them to turn off their VPN connection.

Netflix may also limit the visible library to movies and television shows with worldwide streaming rights.

This explains why Girl, Interrupted may remain missing even when a VPN reports a successful connection to the United Kingdom.

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN can encrypt internet traffic and provide alternative public IP addresses. However, none controls Netflix’s regional licensing agreements or guarantees access to a particular movie.

Can you use a Netflix ad-supported plan with a VPN?

No. Netflix does not support VPN connections with its ad-supported streaming experience.

Subscribers using these plans may encounter a playback error when Netflix recognizes an active VPN or proxy.

According to Netflix’s ad-supported VPN error documentation, users should disconnect their VPN to resolve the unsupported connection.

An ad-free Netflix subscription avoids this particular plan restriction, but it does not guarantee access to another country’s movie catalog.

Netflix can still recognize VPN traffic, restrict the available titles, or prevent playback when a movie lacks worldwide streaming rights.

Upgrading to an ad-free subscription should therefore not be considered a guaranteed method for accessing Girl, Interrupted through Netflix UK.

Does changing the VPN location change your Netflix account?

Changing your VPN location does not automatically modify your Netflix email address, password, billing information, subscription country, or saved viewing profiles.

The VPN changes the public IP address associated with your internet connection. Netflix may interpret that address as belonging to another country, but the account itself remains unchanged.

Netflix catalogs differ because studios and distributors license movies separately for different geographic territories.

Girl, Interrupted illustrates this distinction. Netflix UK lists the film, while Netflix US does not currently include it in its subscription catalog.

Netflix’s account country documentation explains that subscribers generally cannot change their account country unless they move to another country.

VPN recognition may also restrict the available titles regardless of the country associated with the connection’s visible IP address.

For American viewers, current US streaming options include Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel and free ad-supported viewing through Tubi.

Viewers can also rent or purchase Girl, Interrupted through digital services such as Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home.

These options offer authorized ways to watch the movie without relying on another country’s Netflix catalog.

Which VPN should you use?

Private Internet Access is our first recommendation because it offers UK London, UK Manchester, UK Southampton, UK Tottenham, and UK Streaming Optimized connections, along with WireGuard and OpenVPN support. These features provide flexible options for privacy and authorized streaming. However, PIA instructs users to select servers matching their physical country and prohibits circumventing geographic streaming restrictions. It cannot guarantee access to Netflix UK from the United States.

ExpressVPN ranks second with seven documented British locations, including Docklands, East London, London, Manchester, Midlands, Tottenham, and Wembley, plus support for Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN. NordVPN comes third with 853 advertised British servers across Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester, along with NordLynx and automatically enabled SmartPlay. Both provide useful privacy and networking features, although Netflix may still recognize their connections and restrict regional titles.

As of October 30, 2026, Girl, Interrupted (1999) has a clean official Netflix UK movie listing and appears in JustWatch UK’s Netflix catalog, while Netflix US does not currently offer it. Regional licensing, VPN recognition, subscription restrictions, and provider terms may prevent playback through international connections. American viewers can instead watch the film through Sony Pictures Core Amazon Channel, Tubi, or authorized US digital rental services.
