How to Watch Ocean Waves on Netflix in the US with a VPN (2026)

Ocean Waves (1993) is listed on Netflix UK. Directed by Tomomi Mochizuki and produced by Studio Ghibli, this romantic coming-of-age drama follows Taku Morisaki, a young man looking back at his complicated high school friendships in Kochi, Japan. The Japanese voice cast includes Nobuo Tobita as Taku, Yoko Sakamoto as Rikako Muto, and Toshihiko Seki as Yutaka Matsuno. The official Netflix UK title page identifies the film, Japanese original audio, and English subtitles.

Unfortunately, Ocean Waves is not currently available on Netflix US. American subscribers interested in its British listing can find UK VPN connections through Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN. PIA provides dedicated UK streaming infrastructure, ExpressVPN offers seven documented British locations, and NordVPN advertises more than 440 UK servers.

However, connecting through Britain does not guarantee access to Ocean Waves. JustWatch UK lists Netflix availability, but Netflix’s public movie page may return a location-based warning when accessed from outside the relevant region. Netflix may also recognize VPN traffic and restrict playback to titles with worldwide rights. Its official VPN documentation explains these rules. Subscribers must also comply with their VPN provider’s terms.

How to watch Ocean Waves on Netflix with a VPN

If Netflix and your VPN provider permit the intended connection, follow these eight steps to check the British Netflix listing.

1. Choose a VPN provider, starting with Private Internet Access, followed by ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
2. Download and install the VPN application from the provider’s official website.
3. Connect to a documented United Kingdom server.
4. Fully close Netflix, including open tabs and background application sessions.
5. Reopen Netflix after establishing the VPN connection.
6. Sign in with your existing Netflix account credentials.
7. Search for Ocean Waves (1993), also known as Umi ga Kikoeru.
8. Start playback if the movie appears and your subscription, licensing rights, and applicable terms permit access.

Choose the United Kingdom manually. Automatic VPN location selection usually prioritizes speed, latency, or server load, which may result in an American connection.

You can also examine the Netflix UK title page for Ocean Waves. Its Netflix title ID is 80158668.

The story centers on Taku and Yutaka, two longtime friends whose relationship becomes strained when Rikako, a transfer student from Tokyo, arrives at their school.

Ocean Waves was originally produced for Japanese television rather than as a major theatrical release. Its quieter story and realistic teenage characters distinguish it from many of Studio Ghibli’s fantasy films.

The Japanese title is Umi ga Kikoeru, written 海がきこえる. Searching for that title may help identify the film in localized catalogs.

The movie runs approximately 72 minutes. Netflix’s British page identifies Japanese original audio and English subtitles, making subtitles especially important because an English dubbed audio track is not listed there.

Actual language options can vary by device and account settings. A successful British VPN connection does not guarantee that Netflix will permit playback from the United States.

Best VPNs for watching Ocean Waves on Netflix

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all offer UK server locations. Their differences involve streaming optimization, available protocols, city selection, and network infrastructure.

VPN	British server locations	Option to try first
Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice)	London, Manchester, Southampton, Tottenham, UK Streaming Optimized	UK Streaming Optimized for permitted local streaming
ExpressVPN	Docklands, East London, London, Manchester, Midlands, Tottenham, Wembley	UK London
NordVPN	Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester; 440+ UK servers advertised	United Kingdom automatic connection

These locations come from official VPN provider documentation and do not establish successful Netflix playback.

1. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is our Editor’s Choice because it provides dedicated UK streaming infrastructure, multiple British city endpoints, and flexible connection protocols.

According to the official PIA server directory, the provider offers London, Manchester, Southampton, Tottenham, and UK Streaming Optimized.

UK locations and streaming support

PIA’s four city-specific entries support everyday encrypted browsing. Its UK Streaming Optimized location is configured for permitted local streaming.

For legitimate streaming activity in Britain, UK Streaming Optimized offers a reasonable first choice. London and Manchester provide alternatives if a connection becomes unstable.

However, streaming-optimized servers cannot override content licensing or guarantee that Netflix will play Ocean Waves.

How to select a British PIA location

Open PIA and sign in. Select VPN SERVER, search for UK or United Kingdom, and choose a documented location.

Connect and confirm the application reports an active VPN session. PIA also allows users to mark preferred locations as favorites.

If an authorized connection experiences ordinary congestion, disconnect and reconnect or try another published UK endpoint.

WireGuard and OpenVPN

PIA supports WireGuard and OpenVPN on compatible devices. WireGuard uses a lightweight architecture, while OpenVPN offers an established alternative with broad device support.

Users can select the protocol in the application’s Settings menu. Disconnecting before changing protocols helps the application establish a clean connection.

For streaming, sustained throughput and reliable network routing matter more than the selected protocol’s name.

Physical and virtual infrastructure

PIA distinguishes physical from virtual VPN destinations. Its published virtual location list does not include the United Kingdom.

This means PIA does not currently classify its British endpoints as virtual destinations in that document. However, it does not publish every server’s precise physical address.

For American users, connecting across the Atlantic can add latency, while local internet speed and network congestion may further affect performance.

Streaming troubleshooting and terms

PIA’s streaming support guide recommends clearing browser data, updating the application, and reconnecting when ordinary connection problems arise.

However, PIA explicitly prohibits circumventing geographic restrictions imposed by content providers. Its streaming guidance directs users toward servers in their physical country.

Review the PIA Terms of Service before connecting. American subscribers should not interpret UK server availability as permission to bypass Netflix’s regional rules.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN ranks second because it offers seven documented British server locations and support for several VPN protocols.

Its official server directory lists Docklands, East London, London, Manchester, Midlands, Tottenham, and Wembley.

Choosing an ExpressVPN location

ExpressVPN’s multiple London-area entries offer flexibility, while Manchester and the Midlands provide geographical alternatives.

To connect, open ExpressVPN, sign in, open the location selector, search for United Kingdom, and choose a documented endpoint.

Smart Location selects servers according to network conditions but does not necessarily choose Britain. Manual selection is appropriate when an authorized task needs a UK IP address.

Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN

ExpressVPN supports Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN on compatible applications.

Lightway is ExpressVPN’s proprietary protocol, while WireGuard offers a lightweight alternative and OpenVPN supports established UDP and TCP connections.

Users experiencing ordinary network instability can test another supported protocol, although protocol availability varies by device.

Server infrastructure and performance

ExpressVPN distinguishes between physical and virtual server destinations. The United Kingdom does not appear in its published virtual location list.

However, the company does not disclose the precise address of every individual British server.

Actual connection performance depends on internet speed, international routing, congestion, and device capabilities. Choosing a different UK endpoint may improve an ordinary connection issue.

ExpressVPN streaming limitations

ExpressVPN requires subscribers to follow copyright laws and content provider terms.

If an authorized streaming connection becomes unstable, users can update the application or compare documented UK endpoints.

Netflix may recognize VPN traffic regardless of connection quality. ExpressVPN cannot guarantee playback of Ocean Waves through Netflix UK.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN ranks third, although it provides a substantial UK server network and convenient automatic selection.

Its official UK page advertises more than 440 servers in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester.

Choosing a British NordVPN server

Open NordVPN and select United Kingdom from the application’s country list or map.

Automatic selection chooses an available server. Users wanting greater control can select Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, or Manchester.

The advertised server count represents the network’s size, not verified Netflix compatibility.

NordLynx and connection performance

NordVPN uses NordLynx, a protocol based on WireGuard that aims to provide efficient encrypted connections.

For video playback, sustained download speed, low packet loss, and stable routing matter more than the total number of available servers.

If a permitted connection is unreliable, reconnect automatically or test another documented British city.

SmartPlay and restrictions

NordVPN includes SmartPlay, a streaming-related feature combining encrypted VPN traffic with DNS functionality.

According to NordVPN’s official SmartPlay documentation, the feature activates automatically upon connection.

SmartPlay cannot override Netflix’s licensing rules or guarantee Ocean Waves playback. NordVPN requires compliance with copyright and streaming service restrictions.

What to do if Ocean Waves does not appear

Netflix may hide Ocean Waves because of geographic licensing, VPN recognition, language settings, or an ordinary connection problem. For permitted troubleshooting, follow these eight steps.

1. Close Netflix completely, including open browser tabs and background sessions.
2. Disconnect from the current VPN connection.
3. Reconnect to the United Kingdom if your intended use complies with applicable terms.
4. Try another available British server if the connection itself is unstable.
5. Clear Netflix cookies and your browser cache.
6. Open an incognito or private browser window.
7. Reopen Netflix and sign in using your existing account credentials.
8. Search for Ocean Waves (1993) or Umi ga Kikoeru.

PIA offers UK Streaming Optimized and four city entries. ExpressVPN provides seven documented UK locations, while NordVPN lists Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, and Manchester.

These alternatives can help diagnose connectivity issues but cannot guarantee access to regionally licensed content.

The original Japanese title is 海がきこえる. Check the film’s 1993 release year and the director Tomomi Mochizuki to avoid selecting an unrelated title.

Netflix’s missing-title support page identifies regional licensing, language settings, maturity restrictions, and VPN detection as possible causes.

Netflix may detect the VPN

A VPN changes the visible public IP address, but Netflix does not automatically provide the complete catalog of the country associated with that address.

Ocean Waves may be licensed for Netflix UK while remaining unavailable to American Netflix subscribers.

When Netflix detects a VPN, it may restrict the catalog to globally licensed titles. Movies can disappear from search results even when the network connection is stable.

Netflix explains the limitations in its official VPN policy. No provider guarantees US-to-UK playback of Ocean Waves.

Can you use a Netflix ad-supported plan with a VPN?

No. Netflix states that its ad-supported experience does not support VPN connections.

If Netflix recognizes a VPN on an ad-supported subscription, playback may fail. Netflix recommends disconnecting the VPN.

An ad-free plan removes this specific restriction but does not eliminate geographic licensing or VPN detection. It therefore cannot guarantee access to Ocean Waves.

Does changing the VPN location change your Netflix account?

No. Connecting to a British VPN server does not automatically change your Netflix account country, billing details, login credentials, subscription, or profiles.

A VPN changes the visible public IP address rather than the account’s registered information. Netflix still applies its licensing rules and VPN restrictions.

For account details, consult Netflix’s country guidance.

American viewers can check JustWatch’s US streaming alternatives. At the time of research, HBO Max and its Amazon Channel carried the film, with digital rental and purchase choices also available.

Which VPN should you use?

Private Internet Access is our first recommendation for British VPN features because it offers UK Streaming Optimized, London, Manchester, Southampton, and Tottenham, with WireGuard and OpenVPN support. However, PIA explicitly prohibits circumventing geographic restrictions, so American subscribers should not treat its British servers as permission to bypass Netflix’s licensing rules.

ExpressVPN ranks second with seven documented UK locations, Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN support where available. NordVPN follows with more than 440 advertised UK servers, four documented cities, NordLynx, and SmartPlay. Neither provider guarantees playback of Ocean Waves through Netflix.

As of October 15, 2026, JustWatch UK lists Ocean Waves on Netflix, while JustWatch US identifies HBO Max instead. Netflix’s official British title page identifies the film but also displays a location-related warning in direct requests. Readers should verify access before relying on the listing, since VPN playback from the United States has not been confirmed.
