Microsoft Teams is getting an Efficiency Mode for slower PCs and Macs

Microsoft is preparing to roll out a new Efficiency Mode in Teams to help the app run better on hardware-constrained devices. Microsoft’s message center says the feature will start rolling out in early May 2026 and should finish by mid-May 2026. It is tied to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 560055.

The feature targets devices with limited CPU and memory resources. Microsoft says Teams will use a reduced-resource configuration by default on eligible hardware to improve responsiveness and help maintain meeting quality.

This is not a manual tuning tool for admins first. Microsoft says Efficiency Mode will turn on by default for eligible users, and Teams will show an indicator in the app title bar when the mode is active.

What changes when Efficiency Mode turns on

When the mode is active, Teams will dynamically adjust the outgoing camera resolution during meetings. Microsoft says this should reduce processing load and help the app stay more responsive on older or lower-spec systems.

Teams will also change how the desktop app opens. Instead of launching with a pre-selected chat, the app opens with a static image in the message pane to reduce initial resource use.

Microsoft’s current Teams settings page also shows that users can choose between three behaviors: use Efficiency Mode only when resources are low, never use it, or always use it. That means the feature is more flexible than a simple on or off switch.

Why this matters for low-end devices

For users on older laptops, entry-level desktops, and thin client-style setups, Teams performance can drop fast during calls and multitasking. Microsoft is clearly trying to lower the app’s resource demands instead of expecting every user to move to newer hardware right away.
