How to Watch Nice Dreams on Netflix in the US with a VPN (2026)

Nice Dreams (1981), the cult comedy starring Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, is available on Netflix France. Directed by Tommy Chong, the movie follows the comedy duo as they operate an ice cream truck that hides an illegal marijuana business. The film also features Stacy Keach, Evelyn Guerrero, and Paul Reubens. French streaming listings identify the movie as Cheech & Chong – Gelés ben dur, while the official Netflix France page for Nice Dreams uses the title Cheech & Chong’s Nice Dreams.

However, Nice Dreams is not available on Netflix US as of October 2026. American viewers can rent or purchase the movie through services such as Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home, but Netflix US does not currently offer it through a subscription. Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all provide French VPN server connections, allowing users to establish connections with French IP addresses.

Connecting to a French VPN server does not guarantee that Netflix will display or play Nice Dreams. Netflix can recognize VPN traffic and restrict the available catalog to titles licensed worldwide. Its official VPN support policy explains these limitations. Users must also respect their VPN provider’s terms and Netflix’s applicable restrictions.

How to watch Nice Dreams on Netflix with a VPN

Netflix France currently lists Nice Dreams, but using a French VPN connection does not automatically unlock the French Netflix catalog. If your VPN provider and Netflix permit the connection, follow these eight steps to check whether the movie is available.

1. Choose a VPN service. Private Internet Access ranks first in our comparison for its documented French server options and connection controls, followed by ExpressVPN and NordVPN. Review each provider’s restrictions before subscribing.
2. Download and install the official VPN application on your Windows PC, Mac, smartphone, or another supported device. Open the application and sign in using your VPN account.
3. Open the VPN server list and select France. Choose an available French location instead of relying on an automatic connection that might select another country.
4. Fully close Netflix, including any browser tabs or applications running in the background.
5. After establishing the VPN connection, reopen Netflix through your browser or the official application.
6. Sign in using your existing Netflix account credentials. You do not need to create a separate Netflix account simply to connect through a VPN.
7. Search for Nice Dreams or Cheech & Chong’s Nice Dreams. You can also try Cheech & Chong – Gelés ben dur, the localized title used by French streaming directories.
8. If Netflix displays the movie and permits access, select it and start playback. If the title remains unavailable or Netflix reports a VPN error, follow the service’s official guidance.

Netflix France lists the movie as a 1981 comedy featuring Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong, and Stacy Keach. Its story centers on Cheech and Chong’s unusual ice cream business, which quickly leads to increasingly absurd encounters with the police and other characters.

The official French Netflix listing for Nice Dreams identifies English as the original audio language. It also lists German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese audio. Available subtitles include English, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, and Ukrainian.

Those language options come from the official French title page. The languages available during actual playback may vary according to the account, interface, device, and viewing region.

JustWatch France independently confirms that Netflix carries the movie. However, the English-language version of Netflix’s French page has also returned an availability warning during checks. The French-language page did not display that warning, so it provides the clearest official evidence of regional availability.

Because licensing agreements can change, verify the movie’s current listing before paying for a VPN subscription.

Best VPNs for watching Nice Dreams on Netflix

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN all offer French VPN servers. However, they differ in their location choices, streaming-related features, connection protocols, and restrictions.

The comparison below uses officially documented server locations. The availability of French VPN connections does not guarantee access to the Netflix France catalog.

VPN	Server locations in France	Option to try first
Private Internet Access (Editor’s Choice)	France and FR Streaming Optimized	France for permitted connections; FR Streaming Optimized for eligible streaming use
ExpressVPN	Alsace, Marseille, Paris – 1, Paris – 2, and Strasbourg	Paris – 1, followed by Marseille
NordVPN	300+ French servers across four locations; Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg are explicitly named	Automatically selected France server

All three providers can assign a French IP address. However, Netflix can still recognize VPN connections and limit access to its regional movies.

1. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access (PIA) is our Editor’s Choice because it offers straightforward French server selection, a dedicated streaming-optimized option, and extensive control over VPN connection settings.

According to the official PIA server directory, France has two documented connection choices: France and FR Streaming Optimized.

The standard France location provides a regular French VPN connection. FR Streaming Optimized is a specialized connection that PIA designed to improve performance for permitted streaming activities.

For legitimate French VPN use, the standard France location is a practical starting point. It offers a straightforward connection without requiring users to select a specialized server.

To find it, open the PIA application, select the VPN SERVER section, and search for France. Choose the standard France location and establish the connection.

To locate the streaming-optimized alternative, search for streaming in the server list. PIA displays its dedicated streaming locations, including FR Streaming Optimized.

However, PIA has an important restriction that US viewers must understand. Its official streaming policy instructs customers to select a VPN server that matches the country where they currently reside.

The provider also explicitly prohibits using its service to circumvent geographical restrictions imposed by content providers. Consequently, the existence of FR Streaming Optimized does not authorize US customers to bypass Netflix France’s licensing restrictions.

For users who can legitimately use a French connection, PIA supports WireGuard and OpenVPN. Both protocols encrypt internet traffic, although they differ in performance characteristics and configuration options.

WireGuard generally offers efficient connections with relatively low overhead. It is a sensible starting point when connection speed and responsiveness matter.

OpenVPN provides additional options, including UDP and TCP transport modes. UDP usually prioritizes speed, while TCP can help maintain connectivity on networks that interfere with certain traffic.

Users can switch between these protocols through Settings and then Protocols in the PIA application. The official PIA WireGuard guide explains supported platforms and the configuration process.

Another consideration is the physical location of VPN infrastructure. Some VPN providers operate virtual locations, where the advertised IP country differs from the country hosting the physical server.

PIA maintains a published list of virtual server locations. France does not appear among the countries that PIA identifies as virtual locations. Users should therefore distinguish its regular French locations from explicitly documented virtual locations in other countries.

For streaming performance, stability matters more than maximum advertised speed. A distant server can increase latency, while an overloaded route or unstable local internet connection can interrupt video playback.

If a connection becomes unreliable, users can restart the VPN application, update it to the latest version, or switch between WireGuard and OpenVPN. Clearing browser cookies and cached data can also help when a website fails to load correctly.

The PIA streaming support guide explains these troubleshooting methods and the provider’s geographic-access restrictions.

Netflix detection remains a separate limitation. Even when PIA establishes a working French connection, Netflix may recognize the VPN and display only globally licensed content.

PIA therefore ranks first for its documented French server options and flexible application settings, not because it guarantees access to Nice Dreams from the United States.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN offers a wider selection of named French server locations than PIA. Its official directory lists France – Alsace, France – Marseille, France – Paris – 1, France – Paris – 2, and France – Strasbourg.

These five connection choices cover four geographic areas, with two separate Paris entries. That gives users alternatives when network performance varies between locations.

According to ExpressVPN’s official France server page, the provider maintains physical servers in Paris, Marseille, Alsace, and Strasbourg.

For a permitted French connection, Paris – 1 is a reasonable first option. Paris – 2 provides another Paris connection, while Marseille, Strasbourg, and Alsace offer additional alternatives.

To select a server, open the ExpressVPN application and access the VPN Locations menu. Search for France and choose the preferred location.

ExpressVPN also provides Smart Location, which recommends a server using factors such as distance, latency, and download speed.

However, Smart Location may recommend a country other than France. Users who specifically need a French IP address should select a French connection manually.

ExpressVPN supports multiple protocols, including Lightway, WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP, and OpenVPN TCP. The provider also documents IKEv2 support on compatible platforms.

Lightway focuses on efficient connection establishment and responsiveness. WireGuard offers another modern VPN protocol, while OpenVPN provides an alternative for networks that require different transport settings.

ExpressVPN’s official server directory identifies protocol support for individual locations. Availability may differ between Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and other supported devices.

ExpressVPN also distinguishes physical servers from virtual locations. Its official virtual server directory does not list France among the countries using physical infrastructure elsewhere.

The provider explicitly confirms that its French locations use servers physically hosted in France. This is important because a virtual French IP address and a physically hosted French server are not necessarily the same thing.

You can review the company’s virtual server documentation for further information.

For video streaming, connection quality depends on the user’s internet connection, server congestion, and network routing. A server with low latency may provide a more responsive connection, although it does not automatically guarantee uninterrupted playback.

If the VPN experiences technical problems, users can compare Paris – 1 with Paris – 2 or select Marseille, Strasbourg, or Alsace. They can also change to another supported protocol.

These changes can help with ordinary connection issues, but they cannot override Netflix licensing restrictions.

Netflix may identify all of ExpressVPN’s French connections as VPN traffic and prevent access to Nice Dreams, even when the VPN successfully establishes a French IP address.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN offers a large French server network, automatic connection selection, and features designed to make secure streaming easier.

Its official France server page advertises more than 300 servers across four French locations. The page explicitly names Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg as available cities.

The provider’s published server count and locations can change as it adds, removes, or reorganizes infrastructure. Users should check the application for the currently available choices.

NordVPN’s automatic connection system is one of its convenient features. Instead of choosing a particular server manually, users can select France and let the application recommend an available connection.

To connect, open NordVPN, search for France in the country list, and select the country. The application will establish a connection using an available French server.

Users who prefer manual selection can choose an available French city or individual server through the location controls, where supported by their application.

Paris is a sensible option for users seeking a French connection. Marseille and Strasbourg provide alternatives when network conditions vary.

NordVPN also offers NordLynx, its WireGuard-based VPN protocol. NordLynx aims to combine efficient encrypted connections with privacy protections.

Because VPN traffic travels through an additional server, connection speed can depend on the distance between the user and the selected French location. Local internet quality and network congestion can also affect performance.

Another feature is SmartPlay, which NordVPN includes with its applications.

According to the company’s official SmartPlay documentation, this technology combines VPN encryption with DNS-related functionality to support private streaming.

SmartPlay activates automatically when the user connects to a NordVPN server. It does not require another application, extension, or manual activation.

However, SmartPlay does not guarantee that Netflix will provide access to regionally restricted movies. Netflix can still recognize VPN traffic and limit its catalog.

Users experiencing ordinary connection problems can disconnect and reconnect, choose another available French server, or allow NordVPN to make another automatic recommendation.

Switching to a supported VPN protocol may also help when the local network interferes with a connection. These adjustments address network stability rather than content licensing.

NordVPN’s combination of numerous French servers, automatic selection, NordLynx, and SmartPlay makes it a practical third option for secure connections in France.

Nevertheless, none of these features guarantees that Nice Dreams will appear or play through Netflix when the viewer connects from the United States.

What to do if Nice Dreams does not appear

If Nice Dreams does not appear in Netflix search results, the problem may involve regional licensing, VPN detection, Netflix profile settings, or cached browser data. For VPN use that Netflix and your provider permit, the following checks can help identify connection-related problems.

1. Close Netflix completely, including all browser tabs and any background application processes.
2. Disconnect from your current VPN server.
3. Reconnect to France using a connection permitted by your VPN provider and the applicable streaming service.
4. Try another available French server or location if the original connection experiences technical problems.
5. Clear Netflix-related browser cookies and cached data to remove outdated session information.
6. Open an incognito or private browser window to check whether existing browser data contributes to the problem.
7. Reopen Netflix and sign in using your existing account credentials.
8. Search for Nice Dreams, Cheech & Chong’s Nice Dreams, or Cheech & Chong – Gelés ben dur. Check whether Netflix displays the title and permits playback.

Private Internet Access users can compare its standard France connection with FR Streaming Optimized for permitted activities. However, PIA explicitly prohibits using its service to bypass geographical restrictions imposed by content providers.

ExpressVPN users can compare Paris – 1, Paris – 2, Marseille, Strasbourg, and Alsace when diagnosing connection problems. Changing locations may improve VPN connectivity but does not guarantee Netflix access.

NordVPN users can reconnect using automatic France selection or choose another available French server. The provider’s application can help identify an alternative connection when network conditions change.

The movie’s alternate titles may also help when searching. Netflix France uses Cheech & Chong’s Nice Dreams, while JustWatch France identifies the film as Cheech & Chong – Gelés ben dur.

If the movie remains missing, review your Netflix profile’s maturity rating and language preferences. Netflix can hide certain movies when the profile’s settings do not match a title’s classification or available languages.

The company’s official missing-title troubleshooting guide identifies licensing restrictions, VPN detection, maturity settings, and language preferences as possible reasons why a movie does not appear.

Netflix may also restrict regional movies when it recognizes a VPN. Changing servers cannot guarantee that a geographically licensed title will become accessible.

If Netflix reports a VPN-related error, follow its recommendation to disconnect the VPN. Users should also respect their VPN provider’s service restrictions.

Netflix may detect the VPN

A VPN routes internet traffic through another server and changes the public IP address that websites and streaming platforms see.

When users connect to a French VPN server, websites may identify the connection as originating from France rather than the user’s physical location in the United States.

However, a French IP address does not automatically provide access to every movie in Netflix France’s catalog.

Netflix licenses movies and television shows for specific countries and regions. These agreements determine where the service can legally offer individual titles.

The platform also uses systems that detect certain VPN and proxy connections. When Netflix recognizes a VPN, it may show only movies and shows available worldwide.

Consequently, Nice Dreams can appear in the normal French catalog while remaining unavailable to someone connecting through a French VPN server from the United States.

Users may encounter missing search results, unavailable-title messages, or playback errors.

Netflix’s official VPN documentation explains why VPN users may see a limited catalog and recommends disabling the VPN when it prevents access to content in their region.

Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN cannot change Netflix’s licensing agreements. Their French server networks provide connection options, not guaranteed access to the French Netflix library.

Can you use a Netflix ad-supported plan with a VPN?

No. Netflix explicitly states that its ad-supported experience does not support VPN connections.

Users with an ad-supported subscription may encounter an error when they attempt to watch Netflix through a VPN or proxy service.

Netflix identifies error E121 as one possible indication of this restriction. The service recommends disconnecting the VPN to restore playback.

Its official guidance for VPN errors on ad-supported plans explains how to identify the issue and check the subscription.

An ad-free subscription avoids this specific restriction, but regional VPN detection can still apply.

In other words, upgrading to an ad-free Netflix plan does not guarantee that a US subscriber can access Nice Dreams through Netflix France.

Before changing subscriptions, review the available US streaming alternatives and consider whether renting or purchasing the movie would be more practical.

Does changing the VPN location change your Netflix account?

Connecting through a French VPN server does not automatically change your Netflix username, password, billing details, profiles, or subscription.

A VPN primarily changes the public IP address associated with your connection. It does not convert a US Netflix account into a French account.

Netflix offers different movies in different countries because studios and distributors license content by region.

According to Netflix’s account country guidance, subscribers generally cannot change their account country unless they move to another country.

The platform may also recognize a VPN connection and restrict the catalog to globally available titles.

For Nice Dreams, this means that changing the visible network location does not guarantee access to the movie or alter the underlying account information.

American viewers can instead consult JustWatch’s US streaming listing for Nice Dreams.

At the time of our October 2026 check, the movie was available to rent or purchase through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home. Rental and purchase availability does not mean the movie is included with a Netflix subscription.

Which VPN should you use?

Private Internet Access is our Editor’s Choice because it offers the officially documented France and FR Streaming Optimized connections, WireGuard and OpenVPN support, and flexible application settings. However, PIA’s streaming policy prohibits circumventing geographical content restrictions and instructs users to connect to a server in their current country. US viewers must consider that limitation before attempting to access Netflix France.

ExpressVPN provides five documented French connection choices across Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg, and Alsace, along with Lightway, WireGuard, and OpenVPN support on compatible devices. NordVPN advertises more than 300 French servers across four locations, with Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg explicitly documented. It also offers automatic server selection, NordLynx, and SmartPlay. Both services provide useful features for permitted French VPN connections, but neither guarantees Netflix playback.

Nice Dreams (1981) is currently available on Netflix France, where the French-language official Netflix title page and JustWatch confirm its listing. Netflix US does not currently offer the movie through a subscription. Although all three VPN providers support French connections, Netflix’s licensing rules, VPN detection, subscription limitations, and VPN provider terms mean access from the United States is not guaranteed.
