AWS Middle East Outage Hits EC2 and Networking After Data Center Fire

AWS faced a major outage in its me-central-1 region on March 1, 2026. Unidentified objects struck a data center in mec1-az2, sparking a fire. Fire crews shut off all power, including generators, halting EC2 instances, EBS volumes, RDS, and networking APIs.

The incident started around 4:30 AM PST (4:30 PM Dubai time). AWS shifted traffic to other zones but hit API errors like Allocate Address and Associate Address. Customers could not move Elastic IPs from dead instances. This trapped failovers in a “networking API trap.”

AWS status page detailed the timeline. By 6:01 PM PST, they rolled out forceful IP disassociation. Power restoration awaits local authority clearance as of March 3.

Outage spread to mec1-az3 and touched mec1-az1 later. S3 saw errors but held due to regional design. AWS urged multi-zone setups and backups to other regions.

Affected Services

  • EC2 instances and networking APIs throttled.
  • EBS, RDS unavailable in impacted zones.
  • Console/CLI errors elevated.
  • Longer launch times from traffic surge.

Multi-AZ customers fared better. AWS recommends snapshots and region failovers. Reddit sysadmins noted rare physical “hard down” lessons for DR plans.

Recovery Tips

  • Launch in healthy AZs/regions.
  • Retry provisions; use backups.
  • Monitor health dashboard.
  • Test multi-zone redundancy.
