Say Goodbye to Google One VPN

Google decided to pull the plug on its Google One VPN service, and it’s all happening on June 20, 2024. 

For those who’ve been out of the loop, a VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is like your personal invisibility cloak on the internet. It’s great for sneaking past those annoying location-based content restrictions or just keeping your browsing history under wraps.

But it looks like not enough folks were using Google One’s VPN to make it worth their while, so they’re shifting gears to focus on other features.

Now, if you’re thinking, “What about my privacy?” don’t sweat it too much. Google isn’t leaving you high and dry. For starters, this shutdown won’t affect everyone globally. For example, users in India won’t have to worry since the service was never available there in the first place. And if you’re rocking a Google Pixel device, you’re still in luck. Google’s making sure Pixel phones, especially the newer models like the Pixel 7 and beyond, will keep their VPN perks through an update. This new feature, dubbed “VPN by Google,” is baked right into the operating system, making things super seamless.

But what about everyone else?

Well, Google’s got some advice on how to uninstall the VPN from your devices and even suggests checking out other VPN options.

They’re not leaving you out in the cold. And for those who’ve been enjoying the VPN as part of their Google One subscription, there’s a silver lining. Despite the VPN service sailing into the sunset, Google’s not hiking up the prices for Google One plans. So, you’re not losing out on the deal you signed up for.

It’s a bittersweet moment, really. On one hand, it’s a reminder of how quickly tech services can come and go, depending on user interest and company priorities.
