third-party developers will be able to build vpn apps for appletv

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicked off on Monday, featuring everything that’s about to come to the company’s lineup.

As always, the tech giant presented new software, but this year it revealed a bevy of new hardware as well.

With the event being jam-packed as usual, there wasn’t enough time for Apple to cover everything it’s been working on.

One of the things that didn’t get enough attention is the fact that third-party developers will soon be able to create VPN apps for Apple TV.

VPN apps coming to tvOS 17

Due to so much news, Apple left the details about the support for third-party VPNs for Apple TV in the footnotes.

For users who want extra security and the option to connect through servers in specific locations, this is huge news.

It unlocks content from another region, opening up more opportunities for watching live sports and circumventing other kinds of geo-restrictions.

This change offers a fix to existing problems users had with services such as Netflix and Paramount+ for a while.

→ The opportunity to add third-party VPNs to Apple TV will come when tvOS 17 arrives this fall.

That is when users will start seeing an influx of some of the top VPNs available coming to the Apple TV App Store.

Reddit users have already shared their conversations with top-tier VPNs. They asked them about potential support for Apple TV.

ExpressVPN, for example, is enthusiastic about building a specific app for tvOS 17.

Before the news of this addition, the only way users were able to spoof their location when using Apple TV was by using a VPN on their TV or router or sharing the connection from their computer.

Both methods are rather complicated, expensive, or both.

At WWDC, Apple also revealed its Vision Pro Headset, iOS 17, MacBook Air, and more.

In other news that didn’t receive much attention, it also mentioned enabling enterprise customers to configure WiFi and VPN configurations for watchOS 10.
